Description:

The Reshi is a woody mushroom, very solid and hard. It is a Polypore with a Kidney like shape. Its cap varies between 5 to 20 cm. It has a shiny glossy enameled appearance. The cap color can be reddish brown to a dull red in color. Outside edges are white, turning brown red. Its fragrance is musty. The mushroom is typically extracted by steaming , and used as tea, or in soups.

Medicinal Properties:

The Cheese and Japanese tout this mushroom for its health invigorating effects, and longevity, treatment of cancer, and treating disease. Reports show the chemical ganoderic acid to be present in the reshi mushroom which has a anti-coagulant activity. Kabir et al, clinical study showed a modulating effect on blood pressure and lipid levels.
In 1995, Yun et al, found that a mice model of lung cancer, showed a significantly lowered growth of lung tumors. Mizushina et al in 1998, reports on two unique DNA polymerace alpha type inhibitors found in the Reshi mushroom. Even in large dosed Reshi is non toxic to healthy cells as shown in Kim et al, 1986, study.

An antiviral chemical was isolated by Kim et al which reduced replication of the HIV virus. Though there have been no clinical tests done, the Chinese history reports that Reshi stimulates sexual interest, especially in older gentlemen.
